History

Our museum was founded in 1955 by historian and local schoolteacher Margaret Fairweather Michie MBE, known as Greta. She wanted to make a museum which captured a way of life fast disappearing. She gathered a remarkable collection of artefacts telling the story of Glenesk and the local area, which reaches out across rural Scotland and to ‘Glenners’ all over the world.  She was up to the minute in showing the past through dynamic living history displays, alongside craft and domestic demonstrations.  She is always our inspiration.
